Let’s face it—no one wants to waste their time, money, or energy on something that might not work. That’s one of the top reasons people hesitate to try physical therapy. Maybe you’ve tried PT before and didn’t see results, or maybe you’re worried this will be one more thing you try that doesn’t help. I get it. It’s a fair concern—and one I hear a lot. So let’s talk about it!
Here, at KinetikChain Denver, our mission is simple: get you results! And get you results, fast. And if we’re not the right fit for you and your goals, we’ll tell you.
So why does physical therapy not always work?
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: not all physical therapy is created equal. And sometimes it doesn’t work because of several different reasons. Let’s dive into those reasons:
- First, due to generic care plans given to all patients. You may have been in a scenario where you were given a sheet of basic exercises and 10 minutes of attention from the Doctor of Physical Therapy. You look over at the person next to you and they are doing the exact same thing. That’s not rehab and it’s definitely not personalized—it’s a workout or a generic set of exercises given to people with the “same diagnosis.” And this typically doesn’t solve your problems, because it’s not individualized care.
- Reason number two: No hands-on treatment. Though corrective exercises can lead to progress in PT, movement alone typically isn’t always enough. Manual therapy can be the difference-maker in jump starting your journey back to health. Here at KinetikChain Denver, we use manual therapy techniques to reduce pain, increase mobility, and facilitate movement.
- Next, there are no clear goals set and progress tracking is not clearly communicated. Establishing your personal goals and progress towards them at the beginning of each session is critical. You should always know what you’re working toward and how you’re doing. This will help you create a clear understanding of your progress and what lies ahead in your rehab journey!
- And last, you get the wrong diagnosis. The location of your pain might not be the cause of your symptoms. If you’re only treating the symptom, but not the root cause of what is going on, it’s a game of whack-a-mole, and we are sitting here just guessing! Here at KinetikChain Denver, we take a top-down approach and assess the whole body to treat the root cause of your pain, so you don’t only feel better – you stay better!
So, you’re probably asking: what do we do differently here at KinetikChain?
We believe therapy should work. Period. So we build our process to remove the guesswork. Here’s how we do that:
- 1-on-1 Treatment: You’ll work directly with a Doctor of Physical Therapy every session for the full time. No techs, no group sessions, and no sending you to the bike for 30 minutes.
- Custom Plans: Everything we do is tailored to your body, your goals, and your lifestyle. No “cookie cutter” plans where every patient gets the same 5 exercises.
- Clear Milestones: We will work with you to create a clear path to your goals! If you’re not seeing progress by your 3rd session, we pivot—or refer you to someone who can help.
- Whole-Body Approach: We don’t just chase symptoms. We look at how everything’s connected—from your feet to your spine to your breathing.
So, here’s what to expect in your first 3 sessions!
Session 1:
- We will take you through a full-body movement assessment and strength assessment where we will identify any limitations in mobility, strength, and function.
- After going through our full-body and strength assessment, we will identify the root cause of your pain or limitation and provide a visual explanation of what’s going on!
- Now it’s time to jump into treatment, so we can get you feeling your best as soon as possible! We will start with hands-on treatment to provide immediate relief and follow up with a few corrective exercises.
- And we will finish by building your custom plan together! Here, we will create a roadmap with you to ensure we are hitting your short and long term goals!
Session 2:
- We begin each session by rechecking key movement patterns to identify improvements made!
- Next, we will start targeted exercises and mobility work based on response to re-checking your key movement patterns.
- And most importantly, adjust your treatment based on how you respond after your first visit!
Session 3:
- We always assess change in symptoms and movement at the beginning of each session so we can continue you on your road map!
- Based on symptom response, we continue with our plan or adjust course to keep you on track with your goals.
- If we’re not seeing progress, we talk about next steps and where to go from here!
We call this the First 3 Visits Checkpoint. It’s our way of making sure you’re not just investing time—you’re getting traction.
You might ask: well, how do I know it’s working? Let’s talk about some common signs that show you are making progress in physical therapy!
Common Signs It Is Working (Even If It’s Subtle)
- Less pain with basic movements
- Easier getting out of chairs, cars, or bed
- Improved balance, range of motion, or strength
- Feeling more confident using your body
- Less hesitation around your daily routine and tasks
Progress isn’t always dramatic or completely linear—but it should be noticeable. We’ll help you see it and keep it going!
We even created a checklist here for you, so you can get clarification to know if you’re in the right place for rehab!
Check it out below!
Checklist: How to Know If Your PT Is Working
✅ You’re getting 1-on-1 treatment from a licensed Doctor of PT
✅ You see some progress after 2–3 visits
✅ You understand why you’re doing each treatment
✅ You feel heard and validated, not rushed
✅ You’re treating the root cause—not just the pain spot
✅ Your plan includes both hands-on work and corrective movement
✅ You’re feeling more mobile, capable, or confident after visits
If you’re saying “no” to more than a couple of those, something needs to change—either the treatment plan or the provider.
You shouldn’t have to hope PT works—you should expect it to. Our job is to help you heal, move better, and actually see the results in your everyday life. If you’ve tried physical therapy before and it didn’t deliver, don’t give up! Remember, not all PT is created equal. Try it the way it should be done.
