Let me make one thing clear: I don’t believe in bubble-wrapping active people or telling them they can’t do what they love to do.

If you’re someone who loves to lift, run, ski, hike, climb, or train hard, I’m not here to tell you to stop. In fact, the entire reason I built KinetikChain Denver is because I kept hearing the same frustrating advice given to athletes and active adults:

“Just stop doing that.” And that’s not something anyone wants to hear!

Whether it was running, squatting, playing rec league, or even hiking… the answer always seemed to be: “Give it up.” “You have to stop to get better.”

Not here. Not with us. Now let’s talk about a better way. A way to keep you involved in all the active activities you love to do while still working on your rehab.

Some PT beliefs and research are outdated. As a healthcare field, research continues to evolve and we have to stay on top of it to provide the best possible care. The old-school PT trap said: “Don’t Move = You’ll Heal.”

This mindset is outdated and often makes the problem worse. Telling someone to just stop moving is often the fastest way to lose muscle, mobility, and momentum, which can set you even further back in your rehab journey.
And even worse, it makes people afraid of their own bodies and afraid to move.

That’s not healing. That’s just avoiding. And avoiding doesn’t propel you in the right direction. It is just a band-aid to cover the real problem.

Let’s talk about what actually works:

  • Adjusting movement—not stopping it.
  • Building load tolerance gradually.
  • Fixing faulty mechanics instead of avoiding the movement.

Our goal isn’t to put your life on pause. It’s to help you train through the injury, not just wait it out.

We do our best here at KinetikChain Denver to provide a different approach and keep you active. Here’s what we believe:

You absolutely shouldn’t have to choose between your body and your goals.
So we help people:

  • Stay in the gym while recovering from injury. We modify your routine to help you get better faster, instead of stopping it all together.
  • Keep hiking while managing knee or foot pain.
  • Run smarter instead of quitting cold turkey.
  • Modify training in a way that actually helps recovery.

We look at what’s possible instead of what’s prohibited. Most of the time, there’s a version of the movement that’s safe, smart, and still keeps your head in the game.

Here’s why “Stop Everything” doesn’t work – And why it might even set you back further.

There’s a few things that can happen when you’re told to stop moving. Let’s dive into those:

  • First off, not moving or exercising leads to deconditioning, reduced muscle mass, and decreased mobility.
  • Second, not moving increases anxiety and fear around movement and mental health is a very important component of physical recovery.
  • Next, it can delay real recovery as it is not addressing the root cause of the problem. It’s like ignoring the problem and hoping it will go away!
  • And lastly, not participating in “what makes you, you” can disconnect you from your identity as an athlete or active person. And in physical therapy, it is just as important to address emotional and mental health as it is physical health.

We’re wired to move. You heal better when you stay active—safely and intentionally.

So… will I have to take a break from anything?

Maybe. But it’s rarely everything.
The better question is: “What can we do instead that supports healing and still challenges your body?”

You might be asking “well, what does that mean?” Sometimes this means:

  • Switching barbells for dumbbells.
  • Dropping volume but keeping intensity.
  • Training the opposite limb (which actually helps the injured side heal faster).
  • Focusing on form and mobility for a phase.

We’re not afraid to get creative with your programming and we will do everything we can to make sure we are still moving towards your goals.

We’ve created a checklist below for you, so you know if modifying your movements is the right thing to do!

Checklist: Will I Have to Stop My Workouts?

✅ Is the injury worsening after workouts?
✅ Are you altering form to get through reps?
✅ Is there sharp pain, instability, or swelling during/after training?
✅ Are you mentally dreading the movement but doing it anyway?
✅ Has your performance significantly dropped?

If you’re answering “yes” to a few of these, then yes—we should modify something. But that doesn’t mean stopping everything. It means training smarter for long-term results.

We take a “train through it” (safely) approach here at KinetikChain Denver!

Here’s how we help you stay active while recovering:

  • We assess your movement under load (not just on a table).
  • We build a modified strength or mobility plan to support your sport.
  • We communicate with your coach or trainer if needed.
  • We constantly reassess and progress you back to full intensity.

Your workouts become part of the solution—not something to avoid.

So, here’s the bottom line:

You don’t need to stop moving to heal.
You just need someone who understands how to keep you moving safely.

If you’re injured, banged up, or just not performing at your best—don’t ghost your workouts. Come in and let’s build a plan that works with your lifestyle instead of against it.

No lecture. No fear tactics. Just honest, intelligent strategy to keep you doing what you love.
