One of the most common concerns I hear from people considering physical therapy is: “What if it’s painful?” It’s totally natural to be a little apprehensive about starting something new, especially if you’re dealing with pain or discomfort already. And while physical therapy can involve some discomfort, I want to be really clear: the goal is to make you feel better, not worse.
Let’s dive into what you can expect when it comes to pain and how we approach treatment at KinetikChain Denver.
When most people think about physical therapy, they imagine grueling exercises, intense stretches, or techniques that might make their pain worse. This is why PT can get a “bad rap” for causing more pain. They might’ve heard horror stories about certain treatments that felt unbearable or “no pain, no gain” approaches that left them feeling defeated.
It’s a common misconception that PT always involves pushing through pain. But in reality, it doesn’t have to. And, it usually does not.
So, here’s what “pain” in PT really means: Pain during physical therapy isn’t always bad—it’s important to understand the difference between good pain and bad pain.
- Good pain is the discomfort you feel when you’re working on mobility, strength, or improving your range of motion. This might feel like a gentle stretch or a slight increase in intensity. It’s your body adapting and improving.
- Bad pain is sharp, stabbing, or feels like you’re making the injury worse. That’s the type of pain we want to avoid. If you ever feel this, we’ll stop immediately and reassess your treatment plan.
At KinetikChain, we listen to your body and adjust our approach accordingly. If something hurts too much, we won’t keep pushing you through it. We’ll adjust the intensity or approach to make sure you’re getting the right type of treatment for your needs.
Here’s what you can expect at KinetikChain and how we approach pain in PT. The goal of physical therapy is to reduce your pain and improve your movement—not to create more pain. Here’s how we approach it:
- We take you through a gentle assessment:
In your first session, we’ll assess your body and the source of your pain. This involves a thorough exam, which includes movement assessments, strength testing, and understanding how your body compensates for pain. - We then create a personalized plan for you:
We create a plan that targets your specific needs, taking into account your pain level, lifestyle, and goals. This means your treatment will be as gentle as it needs to be while still being effective. We don’t believe in pushing you to the limit; we believe in progress without unnecessary discomfort. - We incorporate hands-on therapy:
We use a variety of hands-on techniques (like manual therapy, fascial stretch therapy, and myofascial release) that can help relieve pain immediately. These techniques can often feel soothing and help reset tight muscles, improve circulation, and increase mobility without the need for harsh exercises. - We progress you gradually.
As you progress through PT, we’ll gradually increase the intensity of exercises and stretches. You’ll be able to handle more as your body adapts. But don’t worry—we won’t push you too far too fast. The goal is to meet you where you are at and ensure you’re comfortable as you make steady progress. - We pride ourselves in constant communication.
One of the most important aspects of physical therapy at KinetikChain is communication. We check in regularly to see how you’re feeling during and after each session. If you feel any discomfort, we’ll adjust accordingly. You’ll never be left in the dark about what we’re doing or why.
Now that we talked about our approach to PT, here is what to expect in your first 3 sessions. Your first few sessions with us are all about getting to know your body, your pain, and your goals. Here’s what you can expect:
Session 1:
- We’ll assess your body, movements, and pain levels. We talk to you about what’s going on, what you are looking for, and your goals and then we take you through a full body assessment, identifying areas we can work on.
- We’ll start with gentle treatment that targets your specific pain areas. The goal is to reduce pain here so we can then work on mobility and strength.
- We’ll set goals together for how you want to feel after your treatment.
Session 2:
- We’ll continue with hands-on therapy and start introducing some light exercises. We will go over these exercises together so we ensure proper form for what we are targeting.
- We’ll monitor how your body responds to the treatment and adjust accordingly.
- We’ll also give you some at-home exercises to work on mobility and strengthening.
Session 3:
- By this point, you should notice some improvement in your pain and mobility.
- We’ll continue to progress with gentle but effective exercises, increasing the intensity as your body can handle it.
- We’ll reassess your pain and adjust your treatment plan as needed.
Here’s the most important thing to know: you are in control of your pain and your progress. At KinetikChain, we work with you, not against you. If something feels too intense, we’ll slow it down or change it. If something feels too easy, we’ll challenge you a bit more.
The goal isn’t to “push through the pain”—it’s to relieve it and help your body recover. PT doesn’t have to hurt, and with the right care, it shouldn’t.
We’ve created a checklist to help you see if you are on the right track!
Check it out below:
Checklist: How to Know If Your PT is Comfortable
✅ Does your therapist ask about your pain levels before, during, and after each session?
✅ Do they adjust your treatment based on how you’re feeling?
✅ Are you given clear instructions on what should and shouldn’t hurt during exercises?
✅ Do you feel relief after each session, even if it’s just a small amount?
✅ Are you making gradual progress without feeling overwhelmed or in excessive pain?
If you answered “yes” to these, you’re on the right track to finding relief without unnecessary discomfort.
I get it—pain is scary. But the truth is, physical therapy shouldn’t add to it. The goal is to reduce your pain, improve your mobility, increase your strength and help you feel more confident in your body. If you’ve been putting off PT because you’re afraid it will hurt, I encourage you to come in and see for yourself how we can help you recover in a safe, collaborative and comfortable way.
